Nicotine Withdrawal--Preparing Yourself For the Symptoms

from: Roger Chaumont

Quitting smoking will make you feel terrific in the long run--better than you've felt in years! But in the first few days of abstinence you may experience a few nasty symptoms that could have you reaching for the cigarettes once again. Withdrawal symptoms, as they are called, are actually a great sign, because they tell you that your body is fighting back, kicking the nicotine out of your
system and retaking control. But they're still uncomfortable. Being prepared for these symptoms is the key to making it through unscathed.

So first of all, what exactly is withdrawal? Well, let's start by talking about what drugs do to the human body. They don't just give you a temporary "high." They actually cause chemical damage that alters the levels of various substances within your body. As a result, your body comes to depend on the artificial substances that you feed it on a regular basis (cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, etc.).

Giving up those artificial substances can be tough, because over time our brains get used to the altered chemical states they induce. In fact, if you abuse a substance for long enough, your brain simply can't function without a daily dose of your drug of choice.

When you try to kick the habit and go "au natural," your body gets angry. And that is the reason why giving up cigarettes will make you feel a little crummy in those first few days. You may feel a little jittery, anxious or even downright irritable. Other withdrawal symptoms can range from nausea to excessive sweatiness to constipation. All these things are your body's way of telling you, "I want my drugs!"

So when we stop using those drugs, it is only a matter of time before the brain goes back to its original state of functioning. All we have to do is to muster up the will power to over come the withdrawal symptoms that might set in.

No, it's not pleasant and it's damn hard, but you've got to be prepared to face these things. It's not going to be easy, but it is
necessary. Once you get through it, your body will be back to its original, healthy, natural state, and you're going to feel incredible!

A Warning About Relapse

I certainly would not tell you to expect a relapse, but the fact is that one out of three people who are trying to quit experience relapses. This is something that happens within the first three months when one is trying to quit.

Be Ready

Now if at all you experience a relapse understand that there is nothing to feel bad about. It is quite a natural phenomenon. But just because it happened, do not let it get the better of you. All you have to do is start the quitting process all over again and believe me you will be stronger this time because you know what to look out for.
