UPDATE SUNDAY 26 Feb - 12.30pm - The Bureau site shows a peak of 15.44M at 7.12am and a height of 15.29M at 11.59am. The QLD Govt. website at http://highload.131940.qld.gov.au/ indicates the Bruce Highway was cut at Kybong yesterday afternoon - we are not aware of the current situation outside Gympie.  Read below for flood height information - taking the BOM river height reading and using the bridge height information given below, it is possible to work out when the highway in Gympie is open/closed and whether the alternative route presented through Gympie is available.  

25 Feb 2012 - Gympie is experiencing minor to moderate flooding due to heavy rains in the Mary River catchment.

Kidd Bridge on Exhibition Road to the Southside was inundated earlier today and closed to traffic.  The bridge is cut when flood waters reach 9.9 metres.  At 5.36pm this afternoon (Saturday 25-2-12), the height recorded at the monitoring station was 12.49 metres (2.59m above the bridge) above bridge and rising.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting moderate flooding at Gympie, with a flood peak just over 16 metres expected during Sunday morning.  At this height, the Bruce highway will be cut at Inglewood Bridge (Bruce Highway 800m south of Big W).  This bridge goes under flood water at 13.4 metres so it will be likely to be cut this evening if the Mary River rises as predicted.  Traffic can bypass this bridge by following a detour route as per the map below.

Alternative Route through Gympie

Using flood heights and the BOM Mary River height readings from the link and information further down the page should give a reasonable view of Bruce Highway access through Gympie i.e. if the BOM reading (Mary River Height at Gympie - http://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDQ65390/IDQ65390.040993.plt.shtml) is less than 13.4 metres, then the highway should be passable. Once Inglewood bridge is inundated, bypassing Inglewood Bridge is possible via Pengellys Bridge (provided the river height is less than 15.8M). Click map below for full size view. The route south from Big W follows the Bruce Highway to the Normanby Off-ramp (the highway may be blocked by traffic control at this point diverting traffic up the off ramp). Turn left from the off ramp as directed by traffic control, up the hill (Hughes Terrace) till the next intersection (controlled by traffic lights). Turn right into Graham Street and follow Graham Street down to the Brisbane Road Intersection and turn right into Brisbane Road and follow it until it returns to the Bruce Highway.

Note: these directions are for your assistance only and rely on flood heights as provided. If the Mary River heights are near the bridge heights above and rising, it would be best to postpone travel if possible. Also, the Bruce Highway can become flooded at other points South of Gympie e.g. Kybong, so while it may be possible to drive through Gympie using the route above, travel to Brisbane may not be possible.

After publishing the new mobile website for Gympie Websites, we decided to see what it would look like integrated into Facebook.  So after creating a new header image and some simple modifications, we now have our slick mobile site design loading directly as our Facebook Business Page at http://www.facebook.com/GympieWebsites.  We think it looks cool and the simple PHP scripting means it loads very quickly in Facebook.

Thinking about this a bit more, I guess the modifications might not be all that simple for business owners. Facebook likes to keep changing their platform and that means it is a bit of a chore to keep up with the changes to keep a custom Facebook Business page online.  Recent changes include:

• The requirement that Facebook Business Page Iframe Applications (the method of displaying our web pages inside Facebook) be hosted on secure SSL servers.  We setup a secure server 6 months ago for hosting SSL applications for Facebook.
• Changing the name of the pages from Fanpages to Business Pages (didn't cause any issues but some confusion for business owners)
• Changing the Developer platform making it more difficult to add a new application to a Business Page.  We have discovered a workaround for this problem. 
• Making the scripting for removing Iframe application scrollbars obsolete on 1 January 2012 and introducing new API code for this purpose.  The new API code will need to be added to existing Iframe applications within the next 90 days

We have just completed a new mobile website for our www.gympiewebsites.com.au Wordpress development site.  We have developed the new mobile site in PHP i.e. it consists of several very small single PHP files for the site pages  to ensure that the pages load super fast on all mobile devices including IPhone, Blackberry and Android devices.  We chose to develop the mobile site in PHP instead of just using a mobile website conversion plugin in WordPress (we could use the premium plugin PluginBuddy Mobile which provides great results but we opted to do it the hard way and code the mobile site as stand-alone pages in PHP to avoid the overhead of loading WordPress and database calls for mobile visitors).

The ABC website reports that the Queensland Government has decided Gympie Regional Council will operate under an electoral divisional system for the 2012 election. Today (4/11/2011), Local Government Minister Paul Lucas says Gympie Regional Council will now have divisional councillors rather than undivided representation. 

Minister Lucas says he adopted the recommendation of the independent Change Commission.  The Queensland Change Commision (part of Electoral Commission Queensland), undertook surveys and collected submissions from Gympie residents after the Gympie Council failed to conduct a satisfactory survey and then completely disregarded the majority vote for divisional represetation.

The Change Commision findings were that the majority of Gympie residents wanted a return to divisional representation – representation that was summarily removed at the time of amalgamation in 2008 by self-interested Mayors and Councillors, again with total dis-regard to the democratic wishes of residents.

The Queensland Government decision shows a respect for democracy – a respect that is sadly lacking in all elected representatives of Gympie Regional Council. 

The upcoming Gympie Council election in March 2012 will give Gympie residents the opportunity to elect new Councillors – people who can be true representatives instead of the current insular, self-interested totalitarians.

It is time to ensure that the current Gympie Councillors are called to account and made to regret their self- interested decision to disregard the democratic rights of the people of Gympie.

Google +1 Button

After receiving a couple of scam phone calls over the last 2 months, I would like to warn readers about this scam.

The scam involves a random telephone call made to an Australian number from an offshore call centre. A computer is used to do predictive dialing and connect the call, which is characterised by a delay of a few seconds before the other person answers. The caller then claims to be a representative of a software company and requests the recipient to run a program to fix ‘bugs’ in the operating system.

In my cases, the callers have been both male and female with strong foreign accents probably of Indian origin.  The caller advises they are from a reputable Company (Microsoft and Australian Computer Society were given on separate occasions) and insists that have received an error message from my computer telling them the computer is infected with a virus or malware.  The caller attempts to have you run the Windows Event Viewer to identify errors and then they claim they can fix these problems asking for people’s credit card details for the fix.

The best way to deal with these callers is to hang up.

Computer Error Scam News From Google

So Gympie Regional Council voted against introducing divisional representation at the meeting on Wednesday 9 March 2010 citing that a lack of response to their survey indicated that the community didn’t want divisions.

While this decision comes as no surprise because Councillor interest in self-preservation over-rides their interest in community representation, I find it difficult to accept that the whole process wasn’t a sham.

The Council was basically embarrassed into conducting “community consultation” on the issue and then the consultation process was undertaken in a half hearted manner by arranging a couple of obscure daytime meetings when most people can’t attend due to work commitments, a difficult online survey that required ratepayers to have the internet and an email address to complete and a few forms for available at Council offices/facilities.

This demonstrates that the only sincerity given to public consultation on the issue was to sincerely obfuscate the process ensuring that as few people could express an opinion as possible.

The local newspaper also showed it’s true colours as their reporting of the issue did not show any investigation into pros and cons of divisional representation or printing any survey forms to help their readers – a poor effort. 

Even a first year journalist could have done better and easily informed the readers that no divisional representation incurs huge financial liabilities for ratepayers without any local representation or accountability to help on their issues.

The right to divisional representation is basic electoral democracy.  This right has been removed from Gympie Ratepayers by an arrogant decision that should not have been able to have been made by this Council.

With 12 months to go to the next Queensland local Government election, the current Council having rejected divisions have ensured that it will be difficult for any person standing for election.  Prospective candidates now face the daunting and expensive task of conducting their campaign and building a profile across the whole Council area.

I trust that there will be some civic-minded people who will stand for election with a policy of implementing divisions and that the current Councillors will regret this decision.
