The election for 2008 Gympie Regional Council is almost over with a resounding win to Ron Dyne, the former Mayor of the former Kilkivan Shire. Congratulations Ron.

We hope that the new Council can work together and get some runs on the board quickly to ensure community consultation and representation becomes enshrined as part of the decision making process.

It is also important to keep residents informed on what Council is doing and Council should make every endeavour to publish meeting agendas as early as possible on Council’s website - even former Councillor Ron Owen managed to do this with his own resources at www.ronowengympie.com even though the former Cooloola Council kept coming up with excuses why it was not possible.

We would like to see consultation on major issues commence as soon as possible especially before any decision is made on giving land to private developers at Inskip Point. This is public land - land that Council should control and manage with development benefitting the community!

Local Government Survey

The recently completed Local Government survey has been collated and is now online at www.gympiemayor.com/survey-results/. The survey shows some interesting results which identify some of the issues in the upcoming election for Gympie Regional Council to be formed from the amalgamation of Cooloola, Kilkivan and part of Tiaro Shire Councils.

The election is to be held on 15th March 2008 and provides residents with the opportunity to elect a better Council - one with Integrity and having respect for the rights of residents and ratepayers.

Cooloola Flooring and Decking

We have just completed a new website for Gympie Sawmill and Cooloola Flooring and Decking. The Gympie Sawmill in Shanks Street is one of the original sawmills operating in Gympie. 7 years after leaving Cooloola Shire Council, I have decided to finally publish the story behind my resignation as Senior Environmental Health Officer and run a campaign against him at www.mickstimesup.com.

Observing Mick’s antics in recent times brings back disappointing memories and I am now more conviced than ever that the communities forming the new Gympie Regional Council need a Mayor who has respect for professional staff, Local Government legislation and the ratepayers.

My story is probably only one of many sad cases where sacrifices have been made to uphold principles and professional intergrity. In publishing the Mick’s Times Up website, I hope to provide an opportunity for others to write their own stories although I know how difficult it is when faced with the intimidatory tactics employed by Mick. I don’t really know what to expect yet but I am sure that I will see some repercussions for daring to speak against Mick.
