Cooloola Business

The Local Government Reform Commission report released today includes the amalgamation of Cooloola Shire, Kilkivan Shire and Division 3 of Tiaro Shire (Theebine/Gunalda area). Cooloola Shire was formed by the amalgamation of Gympie City and Widgee Shire Councils in 1993).

The new Local Government area is to be named Gympie Regional Council and is to be an undivided regional Council with 8 Councillors and a Mayor.

The report indicates that there is to be “Consolidation of Queensland Councils through amalgamation from 157 to 73 (including Brisbane City)”.

Other recommendations include:

• The new Councils may petition the State Government to alter the name of the new Local Governemnt area.
• Queensland Councillor numbers will be reduced from 1,250 to 526 (a reduction of 724 to emphasise the need for stonger strategic leadership).
• Provision of State Government assistance to manage transition and early implementation of amalgamation.
• Elections to be held in March 2008 with Mayors being elected “at large” i.e. an area wide ballot (same as previous).
• Planning Schemes will continue to apply unchanged (planning schemes will effectively operate as a local area plan for the former area until a new planning scheme is adopted).
• Rating Policies and other policies will apply until changed by the democratically elected representatives of the new local government area.
• Decisions on day-to-day functions including administrative centre location to be undertaken by the new Council
